Motion to Recall WoA for GMA

Si Filosofo Tasyo ay patuloy sa pagpilosopo

I have read the motion of GMAs lawyer to recall the warrant of arrest issued vs her. I think there are several good points there.

l.  There was undue haste in issuing the warrant.   The l000 pages  folders could not be read in less than a day.

2.  As usual, there were arguments saying that there are no documentary evidences pointing to her as the mastermind, except hearsay evidences.

But then again, we are not the judge, nor do I have the tyranny of numbers.

This blog is blessed that it is not being read;  or sparsely read.  I can write without fear or favor.  Only with fervor.

Fiesta Time is Heavy Traffic Delay Time

Si Filosofo Tasyo ay patuloy sa pagpilosopo

On the way back from our trip to the south yesterday, our trip was delayed for more than one hour.  Reason?  They said there was fiesta in Sto Tomas Batangas.  The vehicles were parked along the highway or there were parades, plenty of pedestrians.

In any case, cant our townmates celebrate fiestas to the detriment of the commuting public and the transportation that moves goods and people.

The fiesta itself is a waste of resources;  and the traffic jam.

We can make things better, can't we?

Are Politicians Spending their Own Money for Infrastructures?

Si Filosofo Tasyo ay patuloy sa pagpilosopo

I noticed that politicians are no longer content on putting their names on:    waiting sheds, garbage cans, or waiting sheds, or traffic signs.   School buildings, gyms, and even pedestrian walks are now named after the name of the governor, congressman, and not to be outdone:   municipal mayors and barangay chairman.  I am just wondering whether:   they spent their own money for them, or that there were enabling legislation to do this?  In any case, does the Philippine law allow this?

Temptation for Entitlement and Resentment

Si Filosofo Tasyo ay patuloy sa pagpilosopo

The Bible infant gospels (when Jesus wass born) referring to St Joseph, Mary and Jesus reminds us of the temptation and the grace in the experience of the Holy Family.  When Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant despite not having personal relations yet, that is time for resentment.  And yet when he learned from his dreams that Mary would be the mother of the Messiah, he was grateful.  And it was the season for tragedy, they had to flee to Egypt to escape the murdering soldiers of Herod, the temptation is that of resentment.  The grace that we must acquire is that of generosity.

It is very timely because of this difficult times.  As with the Sendong typhoon, many blaming and cursing and breast beating is taking place, ie resentment.  May be even resentment vs God for bringing in the rains and the flood.  But who are we to blame God?  May be we are to be blamed for this disaster.  The flood was, as we learned from the analysis, a disaster waiting to happen.

But we are glad, many are endowned with grace of generosity.   A lot of them are working hard to bring the city and its residents back to dignity.  Thank you

Disaster Time is a Time to Help; for others it is time to Take Advantage of the Misery of Others

When it is disaster time, many kind and compassionate individuals come out to help.  It is a time for unscrupulous (or heartless individuals) to take advantage of others.  Many donations do not reach the beneficiaries.  Sending of donations to NGO are being scammed/diverted to private accounts. Some NGO or their accounts may be spurious.

In the 90s after the Pinatubo eruption, I was a reservist and I quit the reservist activities though how much it meant to me as a Filipino citizen because of what I saw.

l.  The relief goods were being hijacked by people alleging they are LGU officials, paramilitary or what have you.  This was not much of a problem.  in the relief operations, we had security force.

2.  The relief goods were pilfered.  In many boxes supposed to be containing l44 units, most the boxes we opened contained only l00 pcs.  (We put the items in plastic bags for distribution)

3.  The relief goods we saw being received at the main receiving center could not be seen at the evacuation centers like army and navy blankets, the tents with gensets from Japan.  Was there substitution or MFF term - switching?

4.  The worse thing was that the men in uniform used the event for their petty corruption.  The one day day operation became two days.  But we spent for our lodging at the governor's resort. From what I heard, the attendance sheet we signed were used as vouchers for:  board and lodging, patrol allowance and what have you.  As to who got the allowances, do not ask me?

Pity the Poor

Filosofo Tasio Lives

In one of the video analysis on the floods, there was discussion of the great basins where flood occurred:   Pampanga, the Marikina, and this time, the Cagayan de Oro basin.  These basins drain to the sea or lake.  However, to prevent flooding, the basins must drain quickly.

And what do we have:   clogged waterways due to poor people who have nowhere to build their houses complete with bathroom facilities and solid waste disposal.  And you have a perfect formula for flooding:   when it rains hard (due to climate change) and sudden run off from the mountains (caused by poor people (what else can you call them if they live off on few pcs of lumber?).  Then all of a sudden, we blame PAG ASA because there was warning.  All along, we know these are bound to happen -  the technocrats and experts know these;  only the residents and the LGU heads cant seem to understand lest they lose votes.

Just look at the floodway in Mangahan, victims of Ondoy.  They were supposed to have left 2 years ago.  Only a few left.  But most of them are still there.  And when the next heavy rains come, there will be flooding again and many people will die. And the whole cycle repeats.

There was an uprising vs a FB user who said that let Sendong come again and end the misery of these poor people.  I think she got a point too.  Pretty soon,  the waterways draining  the basins will be again populated by people who have nowhere to go.  And when it rains, the narrow waterways all ready full of debris and solid wastes thrown away....

Just as we Thought; Residents Blocking the Waterways Helped in the Flooding

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Many of the floodings are caused by ever narrowing rivers due to accretion.   Residents squat on river banks or have the accretions of banks titled.  It is the same story.  Water which used to flow freely towards the  lake or ocean suddenly are blocked, water is dammed and the residents are damned.

Who do we blame, God, Pinoy, the Japanese, the priest, who else but the hard headed self serving residents.  And when they die....

They were asked to vacate and leave their residence.  How we wish God gave them ears?  They were born without ears??? Diyaskeng mga tao ito.

We Continue to Throw Trash into the Waterways,; Mother Nature will fight Back

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Last Saturday, I passed by a creek after heavy rains and a creek was full of styropor, plastic wrapper, and other flotsam -  garbage carelessly strewn all over the place by our good brethren.  And when mother nature fights back with a devastating flood, we can only whimper and still be unrepentant.  How many Ondoys and Sendongs must pass before we all learn.

Maybe more.  The fact about history is we never learn from it.

Let Us Help CDO and Iligan City flood victims

Filosofo Tasio Lives

The death and destruction at Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City breaks my heart.  It is as if was judgement day.  May be it is Gods punishment for those who continue to wage  war and violence against their brothers.  Gods wrath will punish even the children and the innocent and show no mercy.

Let this be a reminder to those who continue to defy Gods law and continue to engage in lawlessness.

In the meantime, let us help the victims in anyway we can, clothes, and cash and food.  It it the best way we can spend our Christmas.

Age of Internet Slowing Down?

Filosofo Tasio Lives

There are two recent  developments that may augur the slowdown of the the internet age:

l.  There was published announcement by Mark Zuckerberg that he will shut down Facebook by March l5, 2011, and

2.  The plan in US Congress to censor the internet.

Hmm, less people will waste time (like me) navigating the internet for no apparent reason at all.  More and more people, especially in the US, will start working.  Less tsismis;   less lait.

The Impachment Proceedings Should be Circumspect

Filosofo Tasio Lives

I hope that the Congress and Senate, being collegial body should now be circumspect in studying the impeachment vs the CJ of SC.  If you read the manifesto of members of the judiciary, you and I must agree that CJ should not be tried for the decisions made were collegial in nature.  CJ, RC can not be singled out.  That is why the followers of CJ are viewing that the current impeachment proceedings are levelled against a co equal branch of the government.

I hope justice and sanity prevail.

This PNP member of bomb Squad Should be Fired

Filosofo Tasio Lives

There was loud explosion near our house just before noon yesterday.  A member of the PNP bomb squad was practicing his dog to sniff explosives.  Unfortunately for his dog, the explosive went off.  I do not know if the dog will survive.

We did.  However, this cop should do his thing in a camp, or safe place.  Or in  a far away place.

In the meantime, he should be investigated, he should be  fired, if not fried.

Judges and the Rest of Judiciary Throws in Support Behind SC CJ Renato Corona

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Despite the declaration of Malacanang that it is not fighting the judicial branch of government, two sepaerate l/2 paid advertisements from judges and the judiciary came out in leading daily manifesting support for the Chief Justice.  It is expected that in this country, majority rules;  plebiscite or petitions can sway judgements and facts.  (Like an opinion when repeated so often becomes a fact?)

Whatever is the outcome of this crisis, this blog wishes that:    l.  dispensation of justice shall be faster, 2.  that Eraps accusation vs criminals in robes is not true;   3.  that there will be more maturity in handling difficulties by the executive branch with the judiciary.

They often say, you cant fight City Hall.  Well, the executive branch thinks it can slug it out with the judiciary.  A mature president, using Sun Tzu strategem, would have used the alliance of the judiciary in some other subtle way to get what he wants.  Well, this needs political savvy and maturity. We are not war, and obviously, force is sometimes applied in handling this conflict.

They say that if you are an opposition in Congress, sooner or later, you will have to side with the majority/administration because the executive, DBM has the control over the budget and disbursement of the CDF. But the current tactics are less than subtle and subdued.

We Spend a Lot of Time Criticizing and Filing Cases

Filosofo Tasio Lives

In business, it is a wrong idea to criticise other businessmen, because your criticisms will hound you.  What comes, comes around and comes around very hard.  So this blog is guilty of this.  Please forgive me.  Also, do not waste resources filing cases.  It distracts you from other productive creative enterprises.

In nature, snakes do not bite and inject venom unless it has a prey.  If it bites, because it was cornered or surprised, then it is rare.  But it will not waste its venom in some useless endeavor.  Its venom is to catch and paralyze a sure meal.

We do not have very good snakes around.  They waste their venom needlessly

Beggars are now Very Creative

Filosofo Tasio Lives

This Christmas season, I have seen a lot of new gimmicks and innovative ways by which begging is done.  Now even the jeepney passengers are not spared.  Envelopes, brown or white are distributed.  There is a lot of singing done.  And the usual preachers who solicit donations are still there.  What will they think of next.

This is better than scams, budol-budol, hold ups and other crimes.  God bless their souls

Many Pro Poor Programs Promote Patronage and Mendicancy

Filosofo Tasio Lives

The Christian religion espouses kindness and  compassion.  That is why there is no shortage of aid and welfare program on food, shelter, housing and education.  This is quite admireable.  But if DSWD discourages begging by street children, then the same must be discourged at all levels and magnitude. Or even TV shows that encourage people to wait for the big time (that is why jueteng or casino is bad; they demotivate people to work for their success)

One time, we  had a forum on social entrepreneurship.  The land being occupied by the beneficiaries is tax exempt in the beginnning.  But when I asked. when will the beneficiaries pay taxes, they say they do not know?   What, they will not share the tax burden so that others will be helped?  All they want is to be helped?

Where did everybody get the socialist streak that everything must be done by the government?

My wife is going to have her baby next week.  DWSD where are you?  Mayor?  Barangay captain?  Is it not the responsibility of the father to make sure that he has the money for the delivery of his baby?

Where is the livelihood program of the government?

Where is the govt support for the nata de coco production?  For the rice production?

Where is the government support for the athletes? (Mind you in many countries, sports programs, like maybe cycling are privately funded enterprises)

The government does not have all THE ANSWERS NOR THE RESOURCES FOR ALL OUR PROBLEMS.  We citizens must share in the burden, or even take the lead.

Thanks for the Newly Paved Roads at the Subdivision

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Yesterday, we were amazed that all of a sudden, a road connecting to the main thoroughfare was asphaltedThere was the automated asphalt paver, two compactors (vibratory) and plenty of workers.  The stretch was about two hundred meters and was about 2 inches thick paving.  It was over in less than a day.  Thanks to DPWH, provincial and municipal engineers who made this possible (and other public officials)

It took over a decade to have this repair;  it took over nearly a quarter of century before the local government took responsibility for the subdivision road  because of certain legal niceties:   the corporation owning the subdivision road was defunct and hence could not make the deed of donation; and 2 the titles to the road was foreclosed by a govt bank.  But we argued that since the property is now with the government, having been foreclosed, there is no need for the TCT nor the deed of donation.  Maybe now they saw the light and made the repairs.

However, the nice roads nice appearance will be shortlived, I predict because of the following reasons:  1.cargo trucks carrying heavy load of steel bars will destroy the thin crust of asphalt in no time at all and 2. there is no drainage.  The water logged asphalt will disintegrate very soon.

As for l, the owner of the warehouse which is located in the subdivision doesnt care about how the subdivision roads look like.  May they not increase in number.  We could advise him to relocate his warehouse.  But then again he will invoke his property rights under the constitution.

It is difficult really to enforce public policy, or integrative policy.  So much compromise to be made

Will the RH bill prosper?

Filosofo Tasio Lives

I attended a necrological mass yesterday, and the deceased wish was vs the passage of the RH bill. Well the deceased belongs to a very religious group.  And we expect that the religious will have a vigorous stand vs the highly controversial bill.

We understand that the rationale for this bill is to rationalize the budget of the government vs a rapidly growing population.  But legislating vs the reproductive practices of people may be approaching the limit of civil rights of the citizen and even moral rights.  As it is flags and battle stations have been readied vs the bill and the admitnistration may be in for  loss or embarrassment.

One of the reasons why the Philippine economy has been robust is because of dollar remittances from OFW? OFW remittances account for 20$ of our GDP.!!  And which was responsible for this?  Our countrymen who are on diaspora because of high population growth.  For all we know, our growing population means country with ZPG or negative population growth can count on this country for more OFW:  maids, seafarers, construction workers, entertainers.  And it balances the worlds resources.  Japan, SK and USA have top heavy greying population and their problem is lack workers in the future (they havent figured out yet how to make robots substitute for the dexterity and flexibility of human workers)

We sure have an advantage in this world's supply and demand situation for workers (as India and China have for now)

The Urban Informal Settlers Deliver the Votes; Are Untouchables

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Noli Me Tangere means not to touch.  Well, the other day, I saw garbage floating around near squatter colonies near a waterway.  Well, no one  seems to mind and apply the penalties on solid waste management.  Why, because these voters deliver the winning margins on election.  That is why no one cant touch them.  Or squatters cant be removed from privately owned lands despite duly promulgated court orders.  Noli Me Tangere.  And for this law and order, the rule of law, the rights guaranteed under the constitution remain but words and letters.

Nasaan ang tamang Daan?  Blame the justice system and SC chief?  Will the impeachment change things?

Top Government Branch Probing into the Trivia for Popularity Sake

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Remember the time that there was a Legislative inquiry into the "alleged blasphemous art exhibit" ?  Well it was a waste of media, public, money and time. It also pictured the wrong priorities and trivia mindset of the legislaltors.  I hope they do not further shame the stature of their august body by the engaging in the same inquiry.  Little minds?

Clerics Have Not Changed Over the Years

Filosofo Tasio Lives

In the Rizal novels, there were criticismss by Filosofo Tasio vs the clerics for accepting donations even from the wicked.  Recently we had allegations of the religious receiving vehicles from gaming and  gambling agencies.  Does the church receive donations too from jueteng lords, drug or prostitution lords?  Oh my Lord.

Christmas Spirit Solicitors on the Offensive

Filosofo Tasio Lives

In the spirit of Christmas, expect the following:  envelopes from your local PNP and BFP firefighters.  (Maybe if you have relatives at the jails from BJMP or you brought somebody to a hospital, from the Hospital staff wishing you Merry Christmas)  If you did not get such an Christmas envelope, you are lucky.

What do you do if you get such an envelope, do you ignore or come across?  If you dont, expect reprisals like the BFP will not put out your neighbor's fire, or the PNP will not respond to your call if there is hold up going in your neighborhood.

What do we do?  It is better to give than to receive?  Pres PNoy ano ba ang tama?  Could these guys be taught tamang daan eh may dagdag na sahod at pahousing pa sila?  Baka di na tama yan?  At di pinapansin ang Tamang Daan motto nila?

The Supply Chain Management People Owes to the Nautical Highway Project

Filosofo Tasio Lives

A lot of supply chain people claims remarkable achievement and improvement in supply chain management:   lesser distribution centers, lesser warehouse, lesser idle inventories, cheaper logistics cost, and faster availability of products to retail outlets and customers.

This was made possible because of the nautical highway project of the little girl

Media Frenzy on GMA transfer to VLMC

Filosofo Tasio Lives

There is so much uproar over the undue attention given to fmr President who was transferred from SLMC to VLMC.

For one, it is the job of media to hype an event so that the story will sell copies; it is their job;

It is but natural for anyone who goes to jail or is detained to be treated fairly and better than others especially if they are better of in life.  It is a fact of life.  GMA can demand that as a citizen (it is one of the rights of the accused) and as former President, a lot of officials owe their current positions.  We are a grateful people right.

And everywhere, we know money talks.  Even in jails

DWSD Vs Begging by Street Children

Filosofo Tasio Lives

I used to give coints to children lined up in Pililla during the Christmas holiday as I pass this way.  However, DWSD discourages such practice as it encourages mendicancy.  True enough, when children learn to beg, they love the motivation to work and earn a living.

But it is Chirstamas time?
Where is the spirit of Christmas?

What about other forms of mendicancy and dependency being fostered by society and government:   gawad Kalinga, the welfare fund of the executive branch.?  We just help the really needy?  Who determines who is the really needy?  Really Poor?

Livelihood instead of alms?

Why Am I Against Casino/Gambling

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Of the so many vices and projects, I am entirely against gambling or casino.  They say that it is better than womanizing, or drinking for there is no return, albeit occasional winning.

But gambling destroys value.  It does not add to the society.  Casinos chance of winning is 70% to the gambler it is 30%.  How can you beat that?  Casino helps the poor, but makes more poor people in the process.  We have seen millionaires become paupers in a matter of months.

Gambling is a zero sum game.  Those who get rich (especially casino owners) do so at the expense of others, ie those who lose

And how does the casino treat the millionaires who become poor?  Can anyone guess.?

I support the church stand vs casino and gambling (But does it receive donation from PCSO or PAGCOR hehehe?)

Sound of Music; Sounds

Sound of Music

Just watched the Sound of Music at Resort World, the project of Andrew Tan, an outstanding UE graduate, Magna Cum Laude.  While not faithful to the original soundtrack, the performances of  the Maria was superb.  Her voice had a presence second only perhaps to Julie Andrews.  Acting was superb too and Western actors could be put to shame.  Sound was also good, especially the Philharmonic sounds.

At least we were watching a play where sound matters.  In the world around us, there are plenty of sounds:  sound advice, debates, hot air sounds devoid of action.  And we are all full of sound.

MRT is Has Helped a Lot

Filosofo Tasio Lives

At the center of the plunder case vs the past dispensation is the multimillion dollar loan to MRT take out from the private sector by the government.

We do not take sides as to the guilt or accountability or wrongdoings committed.  But the mass transport system, the train in EDSA has been helpful:  it is fast economical, and saves on carbon emission.

We should have more lines, more capacity of course sans the wrong/doing overpricing

Nawasak is Responsible for the Diggings/Traffic Jams?

Filosofo Tasio Lives

In our area. where traffic jams are the order of the day, MWSS formerly NWSA (nawasa) has earned the ire of motorists and commuters.  MWSS/Manila Water wants to improve water service but their timing stinks;  they went on digging rampage at Christmas time rush.

The diggers are fondly called "NAWASAK".  And they are not being wished Merry Christmas, for all the frayed nerves, lost appointments, tardiness memo, and wasted gas.

Pro Poor Programs

Filosofo Tasio Lives

It is nice to take care of the poor. It is asked of us to be compassionate.  However, we should be more positive and make the poor productive and independent.

Let us not encourage mendicancy and politics of patronage.  Each one is responsible for his life and to live on his own.  The mayor can not take care of your medical bills and worse, the delivery of the baby.  The mayor did not impregnate the wife.

The Bill of Rights and Mob Rule

Filosofo Tasio Lives

In Ph, I learned of a case of a landowner, employing security guards, unable to take possession of his land occupied by squatters,  because the mob, the squatters are lynching the security force.

Talk about rights to property guaranteed under the constituttion.

The mob rules.?

Roads used as Parking and House Extensions Waste Public Expenditures.

Filosofo Tasio Lives

As we commute daily, we just recently built roads that rendered useless:

l.  While they have been expanded into 4 lanes, the additional lanes built are used as parking and storage facilities;  traffic management/enforcement is visibly absent;

2.  The narrow roads become narrower because:

      l.  Vehicles are double parked;

     2.  Some areas are used as public vehicle terminals, parking areas.

How we wish these public expenditures benefit the commuters and make our commuting life faster and easier.  Where are the visible presence of public enforcers, officers of the law, the street and facilites manager?   None?

Halls of Justice and Wheels of Justice

Filosofo Tasio Lives

I happenned to pass by Justice Buildings.  I was startled that the Halls of Justice are full of supplies, junk, unusable tables and equipment.

Wheels of justice are slow.  All judges come in late.  On ten.

On Time or On Ten?

Filosofo Tasio Lives

This morning I had an 830 appointment with a government official.  I had to wake up at 5 am just to be sure that I meet the official at 830 as agreed upon.  I was at the office of the official at 8:00 sharp.  I asked the assistant as to whether the official  is on time.  She said "On Ten" and laughed heartily.

I got it when the official came in at ten am.

A Hero or an Avenger?

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Many said that the real national hero should have been Andres Bonifacio.  He was the pure hero.  They said Rizal rebelled against the Friars and the Spaniards, because the latter landgrabbed the Rizal's property in Laguna.  Would he been a hero, anti friars, had their land not been grabbed?

Hey we see a parallel here.  The executive branch is battling its co equal in the judiciary just because the SC had a ruling vs the family of the President.  And the latter is taking it personally.

Is the President thinking clearly?  Siya ba ay nasa Tuwid na Daan or Lumang Daan, or Dating Daan ng paghihiganti or makasarili.?

Would he and CJ RC be friends had the SC ruled in favor of the President's family/hacienda?

Are we talking here the rule of law, rather than rule of the clan?

Then if it is the latter, under the guise of constitutionality and legality, then nothing changed.

Government of laws, rather than of men??? Hehehehe

The Water Company Cut Off Water to the Barangay System

This country can be great again.

Today we do not have water supply to our household;  they say the water company cut off the water supply to the barangay because it was not able to pay the water bills on time.  Because they were not able to collect all the receivables from the homeowners, because they were busy during the fiesta.

For me, it is a simple act of negligence and irresponsibility.  They should not have accepted the position if they could not do those simple task.  I hope we have more educated and responsible leaders.

Was the Agrarian Reform Program Successful?

This nation can be great again

Yesterday, the new DAR secretary was interviewed on the radio.  He entertained many questions that were texted by the listeners and he adroitly answered many of them, uncharacteristic of a technocrat;  more befitting a politician perhaps.

Some questions:

l.  Were the hectareage and number of beneficiaries KRA targets reached?

2.  Did the program emancipate the farmers ?  how many became legitimate landowners (the Land Bank loan fully paid for).  From the looks of it, many have not started their amortizations yet because the land that was land reformed has not been subdivided yet.  Many sold their CLT especially in Calabarzon sold out to developers.

Did the program help in the food security?

Did the program help increase food production?

Did the program help reduce incidence of poverty?  As we all know most of the farmers are in the poverty level?

Otherwise, the vaunted centerpiece of earlier administration would have been another case of political showmanship (circus?}  I hope not.  We wish our farmers the best.

The poor and the farmers name and their votes have been used many times to win elections?

The Author of the Pro Squatter Law says Relocation Applies Only to Public Land

This nation can be great again

The author of a famous pro squatter law, former activist, top government official now says that the provision of the law that says that:  they have to be provided a relocation site, and expenses for relocation now says it is applicable to squatters only of public land.

It is now too late to say that, or make that clarification.  Many private land owners were terrorized by the harsh application of the law;  many left the country, and thought that private land ownership is no longer applicable in PH.

Well we are thankful that the law's author lost his colorful political career and was badly beaten at his home province in the recent election.

What comes, comes around and comes around HARD

We are Wasting Resources in Pasig River Clean up

Filosofo Tasio Lives

Large amount and effort has been poured into the Pasig river clean up.  Our leaders are expecting Hong Kong harbor peat, (they do not eat fish caught from the harbor because the locals do not like the huge cesspool fish feeding ground) or River Thames.

For as long as there urban settlers there dumping their human and solid waste into the river, its all waste.  The river ferry service/taxi in Pasig river gave up on this hostile situation.

But the urban settlers are vote rich and can swing an election;  so why worry?

Why do we Have to Import Rice?

This nation can be great againi

From the looks of it we do not have to:

l.  Large tracts of land are available for planting.  Some say that there are about 8 million hectares arable land in the country.  Only l million hectares is planted.

2.  There is high yielding rice variety discovered under the auspices of a Chinese businessman that yields 300  cavans to a hectare.  His seeds however are exported to countries from where we buy rice. The prophet, is not recognized in his hometown

3.  Large areas in Mindanao and Visayas are available for rice planting.  They seldom experience typhoon there.

So why do we have to import rice:

l.  DA has to be more effective.  Large budget is allocated to rice production/productivity;

2.  It is more profitable to import rice for the rice traders?  the government buying agencies, and the political lords/businessmen in the province who control  rice.

Food security is an important issue we have to face sooner or later;  our population is growing;  Thailand rice now caost $600.00/metric ton compared to previous $400.00/metric ton.  China is not exporting.

So what do we do next.?

Personal Vendetta is the Name of the Game

This nation can be great again

I saw a movie featuring veteran actor Eddie Garcia.  It is about a town in Laguna where one killing led to more killings;  no case was ever brought to court but the killing continues;  reprisals, vendetta after another.  Up to now, they say, the killing continues.  How sad.  We can not blame them.  It started early on with Biblical filial killings:  Cain and Abel.

But it is sad when it happens at the very high level.  We do not know where the anti corruption (do good) campaign ends, and where personal interest takes over.   The showdown between the judiciary and executive chief is a case in point.

Please take note, when the giants quarrel, the ants get trampled.  We know that our leaders have "ulo" head and they are the head.  And they will use their head, as captains of the country.

Why Traffic can not be Better.?

This nation can be great again?

I had a cop friend before.  Now I do not want cop friends.  They become fiends.

He said that when there is traffic, there is big money.  You do not need motorcycle to apprehend or run after vehicles.

So when you see traffic cops, you expect traffic.  That is what traffic cops are for:  to create traffic.

And oh, traffic cops no longer direct traffic.  Traffic aides-  they aid in creating traffic.  Expect the worse:   many of them  do not know rudiments of traffic management;  and they simply give priorities to friends and drinking buddies, even if they come from side streets.

After Market Exhaust Pipes for Motorcycles

This nation can be great again

In general, much reform has to be made with regards to the sudden and explosive proliferation of motorbikes.  There is dearth of driver training, safety and enforcement.  Hence the alarming rate of increase of accidents and fatality from motorcyling.  I hope the motorbikers can police their ranks and even institute safety training.

One of the things that I mind is the installation of aftermarket exhaust pipes for motorbikes.  Well I understand, that such an exhaust system adds additional power and speed to the the stock motorbikes.  It also prevents drowning of the motor in case the motorbike traverse flooded streets:  the exhaust is angled skyward.

You will note that such a design blows hot exhaust gases into the faces of unwary pedestrians or if you are another biker.

Is this aspect being looked into by policy maker from the enforcer/public sector?

Changing Values

This nation can be great again

I asked our staff:  "What is the most important product in the life of a person?"

And truthfully, the answer was cellphone.

And maybe that is representative of the love of our countrymen:  cellphones.  The telcos have done a great job of preaching marketing, communicating the value of cellphones.

What does this tell about our values now?  Our preoccupation? What do we value now?

Is this good or bad?  Will this cellphone preoccupation help us move forward faster?

Its Christmas time, Its Traffic and Crime Time

This nation can be great again.

Its December 5 and in 19 days it would be Christmas.  We expect two things:  crimes, especially those involving thefts, robbery, snatching, pickpocketing, bag slashing, would be on the rise;  and traffic.

The first one is understandable:  in order to celebrate Christmas, money is needed to buy food and gifts.  How ironic?  I wonder if would make the Savior at the manger cringe at the idea.

The second one, the traffic due to diggings in December is difficult to understand.  There are l2 months in a and maybe 330 days before Christmas.  Yet time and time again, the diggers will dig in June and in December.  There oughta be a law?

Cant we change the digging schedule?

We Spend too much time at Circus

Filosofo Tasio Lives

We love circus and spectacles.  We love events.  Media and marketing people know this and you can count on them that they will exploit this to the hilt.  The more sensational, the more weird, the better.  The spectacle could be uplifting, but most of them are not.  We call it trending too.

The Roman emperors capitalized on this to make Roman populace happy.  So we had gladiators.  The more gory and bloody, the better.  It went on and on.  Even up to now.

So we feed on media frenzy.  And we spend too much time and energy devouring the spectacles.(Or you can substitute beauty contests, boxing, politics, and basketball)  Why worry?  Be happy.

And we lose track of the more important aspects of nation building.  We get lost.

We spend too much time at the circus.(or at the coliseum)

My First Blog Post on Ulo ng Nuno

This nation can be great again

Hi. I opened this blog in order to make comments on public policies.  I do not want to meddle into politics and public policies.  But somehow, they piss us off, and sometimes, they can prevent you and me from improving and progressing.

Some policies and practices are there unchanging.  They have to be criticized and changed too.

Most of the time, we say, do not blame the public sector (the government).  It does not have all the answer.,

But most of the time we blame the government.  We are like this because of the government.

We do not have to rely on the government all the time.  At the same time, we submit, the government must enable us to move forward, rather than restrict us.
